What is Matcha?
Matcha is a powerful green tea, ground into a powder. If you’re making a classic matcha tea, the powder is whisked into piping hot water, giving you a frothy beverage.
Traditionally a part of Japanese tea ceremonies, matcha has a long history in tea culture. It’s a very popular ingredient worldwide, used in a variety of drinks and even as a cooking ingredient.
It’s earthy, but not overpowering. While it has grassy undertones, it’s got the perfect match of bitter to sweet, making it a pleasant and unique addition to these cute Halloween matcha cookies!
Helpful Tools
- Mixer – Stand mixer or hand mixer.
- Rolling Pin – I like a classic wooden rolling pin.
- Cookie Sheet or Flat Baking Sheet – A traditional cookie sheet has no sides, allowing you to slide cookies off without ruining their shape after baking. A flat baking sheet works too.
- Round Cookie Cutter
- Parchment Paper – Use parchment or a silpat for easy clean-up.
- Cooling Rack – While not required, it’s nice to remove your cookies to a cooling rack so air can circulate and they won’t continue to cook on the sheet!
Halloween Matcha Cookie Ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Matcha tea powder – Use a great quality powder to ensure the perfect green color for these cookies!
- Unsalted Butter – (room temperature)
- White Granulated Sugar
- Egg
- Vanilla extract
- Eye candies – Grab any size you want for these, and mix and match to get creative.

Tips
- Parchment paper works well, but a silpat mat works well too.
- Use good quality matcha powder for the proper green color. You can also add 3-4 drops of green gel food color for a brighter shade.
- For the Candy eyes – you can add them to the cookies before baking them but there is a risk of them melting completely in the oven. Another option is you can use a bit of any frosting or even melted chocolate and stick the candies on the baked and cooled cookies.
- The number of matcha cookies will depend on how thick you roll the dough and the size of your cookie cutter.
- Double or triple the recipe using the 1x2x3x tab in the printable recipe card.
