In our home we love switching up the colors in Funfetti Cookies, Sugar Cookies, and Oatmeal Cookie Sandwiches. We get so much mileage out of our favorite recipes this way.

What You Need to Make Halloween M&M Cookies
- Butter – Butter is the base of our cookies—I’m using salted butter, but if you use unsalted, make sure to add ½ teaspoon kosher salt to the cookies (or flaky sea salt on top—also delicious).
- Granulated Sugar – Sugar sweetens our cookies! Brown sugar is also delicious in this recipe. Read about the difference between white and brown sugar here.
- Large Egg – An egg binds all the ingredients together.
- Pure Vanilla Extract – Vanilla helps enhance the flavor of the chocolate.
- All-purpose Flour – Flour helps give our cookies structure. Make sure to measure using the scoop and level technique so you don’t end up with dense cookies.
- Baking Soda – Baking soda helps keep our cookies soft and gives just the slightest bit of rise!
- M&Ms – Halloween colored M&Ms are my add-in of choice! Feel free to use whatever you like!
Variations
- Brown Sugar – Replace the white sugar with brown sugar for a rich, warm flavor.
- Mix-ins – Use any variety of M&M that you would like. You’ve got minis, peanut butter, dark chocolate, coffee, white chocolate, and so many more to choose from.
- Mixer – You can always use a power mixer for the first three steps listed below. Then fold the M&Ms in by hand with a large spoon.

The full printable recipe is below
- Whisk melted butter and sugar in a large bowl.
- Add egg and vanilla and whisk until combined.
- Stir in flour and baking soda until no flour lumps are left.
- Add the M&Ms and mix until combined—don’t overmix!
- Cover the bowl and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F and prepare baking sheets with parchment paper or silpat mats.
- Scoop balls of cookie dough (two tablespoons of dough for each cookie) and place on sheet 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 12-14 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown. Let them cool on pan before removing to airtight container for storage.
Tips
- Melt the butter. This makes the dough soft enough to stir by hand. It also helps to dissolve the sugar and create a chewy texture.
- Press a few extra M&Ms on top of the cookies right before baking.
- Let the cookies cool on the pan. This allows them to finish baking, and helps make the perfect shape and consistency.
How to Store
Room Temperature – Once cookies have cooled, you can put them in an airtight container and store them at room temperature for up to 3 days.
Refrigerator – This isn’t recommended because the cool, moving air can dry cookies out.
Freezer – Once cookies have cooled completely, store them in an airtight container or bag for a couple of months. They can be stacked on top of each other because the M&Ms will stay firm.
When ready to eat, remove from freezer and allow to thaw on a paper towel to absorb moisture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Chilling the dough will reduce spreading when the cookie bakes. Chilling the dough also produces the chewy texture.
Instead of creaming butter and sugar – which produces a more cakey cookie – mixing melted butter with sugar creates a chewy cookie. That’s the texture we’re going for in these Halloween M&M Cookies!
